Separate charcoal and heated-material boxes feed a shared route through water to a mouth. Both sources also branch toward two people in a room without passing through the water. Four numbers identify sources and paths, not a device setup.
Water is only on one route

Conceptual emissions map: no recipe, measured filtering efficiency or equal-dose comparison. Water on the user route does not protect the whole room.

  • Burning charcoal

The fuel is an emission source of its own.

  • Heated material

Tobacco-free or nicotine-free wording does not describe all emissions.

  • Water-to-user route

Partial filtering is not enough to establish safe smoke.

  • Shared air

Emissions from both sources can reach people without using the mouthpiece.

Cooling and partial filtering are not a safety result

BfR describes partial filtering of water-soluble substances but says this is insufficient protection. CDC likewise explains that water does not make hookah smoke safe. A cooler sensation is not a complete measurement of the mixture reaching the user.

The diagram therefore includes water but does not draw it as a shield. It shows a path, not a filtration percentage, cigarette-equivalent dose or personal risk score.

[1][2]

Keep the charcoal and heated material separate

CDC identifies harmful emissions from charcoal as well as the smoke material. Charcoal can contribute carbon monoxide and other substances; removing tobacco from the mixture does not remove the burning fuel.

The two left-hand boxes represent sources, not ingredients to buy or amounts to prepare. Their arrows joining does not mean equal contributions. This page gives no setup, heating or smoking instructions.

What a nicotine-free statement leaves unanswered

A statement about nicotine is not an account of every emission. CDC and BfR describe harmful substances from tobacco-free or herbal preparations too. Their discussion does not establish that every mixture has identical quantities or that one advertised replacement is safe.

[1][2]

A nicotine-free invitation: a reply without a trial

Fictional invitation: ‘Come along; this mix has no nicotine, so the water makes it harmless.’ You can decline on the narrower point: ‘That tells me about one claimed constituent, not the charcoal or the whole smoke.’ There is no need to test the mixture to answer the invitation.

Shared air has a path that does not pass through the water

CDC describes secondhand emissions from both the tobacco and charcoal. People nearby can be exposed even if they do not use the mouthpiece. The room branch matters because the bowl of water is not between every emission and every person.

For a gathering, an ordinary boundary can be ‘I will meet you somewhere without smoke’. This is a shared-space choice, not a promise that a window, distance or change of fuel eliminates exposure.

Which devices and questions this answer covers

This explanation concerns conventional charcoal-heated waterpipes. Electronic products sometimes called e-hookah are different devices; the two-source drawing does not automatically describe them. It also cannot diagnose a symptom or decide whether an individual can safely continue using a product.

If you want help stopping tobacco use, the NHS page below provides an England adviser finder and separate official routes for the other UK nations. Confirm current arrangements; outside the UK use a qualified local service. You can ask about support without requesting a safer hookah recipe.

What to keep in mind

  • Partial filtering and safety are different conclusions.
  • Check fuel and heated material separately.
  • A nicotine claim does not cover the whole smoke or room exposure.

Common questions

Is nicotine-free the same as tobacco-free?

They are different claims. Read exactly what the product says; neither statement proves absence of all emissions, and this page does not verify a particular mixture.

Can this be converted to a fixed number of cigarettes?

Not for an individual from the word ‘hookah’ or time spent alone. Products, fuel and use differ; no personal cigarette-equivalent calculation is provided.

Does the water protect someone who only sits nearby?

No such protection follows from the water path. The diagram separately shows emissions into the room from both sources.
