Stage first, then responsibility

Editorial comparison, not road-law permission. Use only stages in your trip; the responsibility column overrides the activity option.

Prepare for the actual stages, not just the distance

NCI identifies driving among familiar smoking routines. Here the practical task is arranging a whole trip, including stages when you are not driving.

Before departure, check tickets, necessary belongings and the actual transfer. Choose any optional waiting activity only for a permitted stationary opportunity. Keep navigation or necessary trip setup separate from this article; do not plan to search for optional items while driving, moving between stages or responsible for someone’s care.

Responsibility comes before an activity

US NHTSA guidance notes that phone use, eating or drinking and navigation or audio tasks can distract from driving. This is US road-safety education, not a statement of another country's law.

The table uses a stricter practical boundary: no smoking-plan interaction while driving, cycling or crossing, including temporary traffic stops. Passengers keep their activity independent of the driver. If attention or fitness for the trip is in doubt, use appropriate local road-safety or qualified professional help, not a kit as a way to make driving possible. This page cannot approve a stopping place or decide that you can drive.

Example: train passenger, then responsible driver

Fictional example: you travel by train, then take a car for the final stage. During a quiet permitted seated wait before the train, you may use the reading item chosen beforehand. Put it away for boarding, changing platforms and any care responsibility. Being a passenger earlier does not carry permission into the driving stage.

Before the car stage begins, finish preparation while legally and safely stationary. During the entire drive, including a red light, no reading, kit handling, recording or breathing count. After arrival and the driving responsibility has ended, you can review an actual snag such as insufficient transfer time; no detailed route or personal travel record is needed.

A delay changes the plan, not the safety boundary

If a platform or gate changes, put the optional activity away and attend to the actual transfer. A long wait is not automatically usable time: queue movement, announcements, belongings and people in your care may need your attention.

If the planned activity is unavailable or forbidden by the operator, leave it out. At the next permitted stationary opportunity choose an ordinary alternative, or wait without an object. Do not ask a driver to read a card, remind you repeatedly or join a counted exercise.

Prepare support before travel if you need it

A qualified service can discuss preparation beyond a route table. In England, NHS information lists 0300 123 1044 and an adviser finder, with separate links for other UK nations. Outside the UK, use local services and verify current conditions before travel. This is not a recommendation to start or change a medicine for the journey.

What to keep in mind

  • A role can change within the same journey.
  • Waiting is not always an activity window; red lights are not one.
  • Put optional activities away for transfer, crossing and care responsibilities.

Common questions

Can the driver read out my reminder?

No. Arrange your own reminder before departure or use it after the journey. A passenger's plan must not recruit the driver into reading, checking or an exercise.

What if there is no usable waiting moment?

Then no object-based activity is needed on that trip. Keep necessary responsibilities first and return to preparation or review at a later permitted stationary opportunity.
