Make the handoff specific
Fictional example: “I cannot reliably follow the required inspection steps. Before I start, who is the designated supervisor and who can take over?” This identifies a task and consequence without declaring withdrawal the cause or asking an unqualified colleague to certify fitness. Follow the workplace procedure, including how receipt of the report is confirmed.
Prepare a stop-and-handoff route before the shift or task
Before the task, ask the designated supervisor: which existing stop-and-report procedure applies, who receives the report, and who is authorised to take over? If the change continues, ask how the workplace occupational-health or qualified professional route fits.
Confirm these arrangements under the actual workplace procedure; they are discussion questions, not a shutdown sequence or a medical fitness decision. If the route is unclear, ask the responsible supervisor or safety function before starting the safety-sensitive task.
When a change appears during work, avoid adding a new hazard
If a change occurs during work, the designated supervisor can clarify which established pause, report or handoff procedure applies and who controls its steps. Do not improvise a shutdown, cross a protective boundary or take an action outside your training and authority.
Do not rush to finish a cycle, hide the problem, ask an unqualified coworker to cover, or walk away from equipment in an unsafe state. If driving is involved, use the separate driving-safety process; if there is immediate danger or a severe, rapidly worsening health problem, use the workplace emergency plan and local emergency route.
A pause is not clearance to resume
A break or feeling more awake does not certify attention, reaction or judgment. NIOSH describes fatigue as a workplace issue involving both workers and employers. The responsible supervisor, safety function and occupational-health route determine reassignment and any required assessment under the actual local process, not a score from this article.
